A new study from Retail Destination has found that Cambridge is once again top of the Harper Dennis Hobbs retail vitality rankings.
Cambridge has again been named as the UK’s leading retail location according to a list scoring Britain’s best retail centres. The university city topped a list of 1,000 retail centres compiled by strategic retail property consultancy Harper Dennis Hobbs.
Cambridge – which also took first place in 2017 when the last Vitality Index was published – saw off competition from retail destinations in London, including Westfield London and Knightsbridge.
“We just saw a big opportunity in Cambridge, the population, the demographics, a lot of development, huge population growth – I think it’s the largest population growth in the UK currently,” L&G’s Fund Manager Tom Williams
“Disposable income in Cambridge is 30% above the national average and, across the past year, consumer expenditure in the city grew +2%, above the national average.”
Market towns that dominate a small but affluent, and relatively rural catchment area, continue to score well – in many cases they are proving to have a ‘healthier’ high street than some large cities.
